FNmarkets Unlimited Dynamic Leverage

What is FNmarkets Unlimited Dynamic Leverage?

Unlimited Dynamic Leverage gives you FNmarkets' highest available leverage on the first, smaller portion of your exposure. As your total exposure in an instrument grows, the leverage on each extra portion steps down automatically.

So a small trade gets the highest available leverage, and as your exposure builds, the additional portion moves to a lower tier to keep margin in line with the added risk. You don't need to request or adjust anything; the system handles it as you trade.

Important risk notice

Leverage can increase both profits and losses. “Unlimited” does not mean:

  • No margin is required

  • You can open an unlimited trade size

  • Your order is guaranteed to be executed

  • You're protected from losses or stop-out

How does it work?

  • Your total exposure in an instrument is split into tiers.

  • Each tier is assigned a different leverage level.

  • The system applies this automatically, so you don't need to change anything.

  • Your total margin is the sum of the margins required across all the tiers you're using.

Which instruments get Unlimited Leverage?

Right now, only the first exposure tier of Forex Majors, Forex Minors, and XAUUSD (gold) can receive Unlimited Leverage. Every other instrument starts at the finite leverage shown in the tables further down.

Availability can also depend on your FNmarkets entity, account type, platform, account group, and any temporary risk restrictions.

Does a new trade always start from the beginning?

No. The system first looks at your existing open exposure. If you split one trade into several smaller orders within the same exposure group, that doesn't reset you back to the first tier.

Is exposure measured per instrument or across a group?

It depends on the instrument. Some are grouped together: all Forex Major pairs, for instance, count toward the same exposure total, so opening a second Major pair can push you into a lower tier sooner. Others are measured on their own. The live Contract Specifications and the tables below show which basis applies to which instrument.

Why is the leverage on my trade lower than my account leverage?

Your account leverage is just the maximum available. The leverage actually applied to a trade may be lower due to dynamic tiers, instrument-specific limits, higher-margin conditions around the Friday market close, high-impact news events, or stock earnings announcements, or other account restrictions. If more than one of these applies at once, the lowest of the applicable ones wins.

How is my margin worked out?

For each tier, the platform applies the relevant margin formula for that instrument. A simplified Forex illustration is:

Margin = lots in the tier × contract size × conversion value ÷ leverage

The final result can also depend on the live price, account currency, margin currency, conversion rate, contract size, calculation mode, hedging settings, and any active higher-margin condition. MT5's live figure is the one that actually counts, so treat any number here as an estimate.

Example 1: EURUSD, 3 lots

Assume a USD account, EURUSD at 1.1000, and a contract size of 100,000, with no temporary restriction in place.

Margin

First 0.50 lot

Calculated by MT5

Next 1.50 lots

1:2,000

$82.50

Last 1.00 lot

1:1,000

$110.00

The two finite portions add up to $192.50, plus whatever MT5 calculates for the first Unlimited portion. The live MT5 margin remains the authoritative figure.

Example 2: Adding to an existing trade

You already have 0.40 lots open on a Forex Major and add another 0.30 lots. Your total exposure becomes 0.70 lots.

  • Only 0.10 lots of the new order complete the first tier and get Unlimited leverage.

  • The remaining 0.20 lots are margined at the next tier's leverage (1:2,000).

Your trade doesn't restart from the beginning. FNmarkets counts what you already have open first.

Example 3: XAUUSD (gold), 2 lots

Assume a USD account, gold at $3,300 per ounce, and a 100-ounce contract, with no temporary restriction in place.

Next 0.90 lot

The finite portions come to $478.50, plus whatever MT5 calculates for the first Unlimited portion.

Adding to or reducing your position

Adding to an open position

FNmarkets checks your existing exposure first. Whatever stays within the current tier keeps that tier's leverage; anything above it moves into the next tier. If you don't have enough free margin, the extra part of the order, or a pending order, can be rejected.

Partially closing or reducing a position

Your margin is recalculated on whatever's left open. Reducing your exposure can free up margin as you drop out of the higher tiers, though the final figure still depends on the live price, conversion rates, and any active restrictions.

Pending orders

These are checked again when they activate, not when you place them. If your exposure has grown, or a higher-margin period has started in the meantime, the order can activate at a lower leverage than you expected, or fail to activate at all if there isn't enough free margin.

Hedged or opposite positions

These aren't automatically margin-free. Opening an opposite trade doesn't remove your margin requirement; normal platform, account, and symbol rules still apply.

Higher-margin conditions (Friday close, high-impact news & stock earnings)

Around certain events, liquidity can thin out and prices can gap. To manage that risk, FNmarkets applies temporary, lower leverage caps (“higher-margin conditions”) to selected instruments. These apply in three situations: the weekly Friday market close, high-impact news releases, and CFD stock earnings announcements.

While a cap is active, your leverage is whichever is lower: your normal dynamic tier or the applicable cap. If a product is already trading below the cap, its lower normal leverage simply continues. All three triggers use the same cap tables (shown below)—the difference is when the window opens and, for stock earnings, which positions are affected.

1. Friday market close

For most instruments, the higher-margin window starts approximately 1 hour before that instrument's scheduled Friday close and ends approximately 1 hour after it reopens. Exact timing can shift due to daylight saving time, holidays, and market conditions, and FNmarkets can start, extend, or reapply the window as needed.

The Friday cap applies to new trades opened during the window and to any exposure you add during it. Positions opened before the window ordinarily keep their original leverage, unless FNmarkets communicates otherwise. You can still close or reduce a position, subject to normal market availability and execution conditions.

Cryptocurrencies trade over the weekend, so they are not part of the Friday-close profile and keep their normal tiers through it.

2. High-impact news

High-impact economic releases — such as Non-Farm Payrolls, central-bank interest-rate decisions, and CPI/inflation prints — can cause sharp, sudden price moves and slippage. During these events, FNmarkets temporarily applies the same lower leverage caps used at the Friday close.

The higher-margin window opens approximately 15 minutes before a scheduled high-impact release and closes approximately 5 minutes after it. Exact timing can shift with the economic calendar, and FNmarkets can add, extend, or reapply the window as market conditions require.

The cap applied is shown in the tables below. While the window is active, your leverage on the affected instrument is whichever is lower: your normal dynamic tier or the cap. For example, an FX Major capped at 1:200 during a Non-Farm Payrolls release behaves exactly like the same pair during the Friday window.

The news cap applies to new trades opened during the window and to any exposure you add during it. Positions opened beforehand ordinarily keep their original leverage, unless FNmarkets communicates otherwise. Cryptocurrencies, although exempt from the Friday close, are subject to high-impact news conditions and are capped at 1:200 during the news window.

3. CFD Stocks during earnings

Individual company shares can gap violently when the company reports earnings. Around a scheduled earnings (financial report) announcement, FNmarkets applies a higher-margin condition to the affected stock CFD, capping its leverage at 1:5 (20% margin).

Because earnings can be released before the market opens or after it closes, the window is aligned to the company's reporting time:

  • Report released before market open (BMO): the higher-margin window starts 7 days before the market opening and ends 15 minutes after the market closes on the day the report is released.

  • Report released after market close (AMC): the higher-margin window starts 6 days before the market opening on the reporting day and ends 15 minutes after the market opens on the next trading day.

Unlike the Friday and general news conditions, existing stock positions are also recalculated to the 1:5 earnings margin during an earnings announcement — not just new trades. This is because the earnings gap risk applies to any open exposure in that share, however it was opened. For example, a stock opened earlier in the day at its normal 1:20 leverage will be adjusted to 1:5 once that company's financial report is announced. Once the window ends, margin is recalculated back to normal based on your equity and leverage.

Outside earnings, ordinary high-impact news affects stock CFDs the same way as other instruments — a short window around the release for new trades only — and does not recalculate existing positions.

Higher-margin condition examples

Friday example: EURUSD, 3 lots

Assume EURUSD at 1.1000, a USD account, and the Friday FX Major cap of 1:200. Because the normal leverage for the first 3.00 lots is above 1:200, the cap applies to the whole new position.

Trade

Leverage

Margin

3 lots EURUSD

1:200 Friday cap

$1,650.00

Outside the Friday window, this same trade would use the normal tiers and need materially less margin, so it's worth keeping extra free margin available before the window opens.

News example: XAUUSD (gold), 2 lots

Assume gold at $3,300, a 100-ounce contract, and a high-impact news cap of 1:200 during a US CPI release.

Trade

Leverage

Margin

2 lots XAUUSD

1:200 news cap

$3,300.00

The exact figure moves with the live gold price, but the cap makes the margin requirement higher than normal.

Stock earnings example: 1 stock CFD

Assume a stock CFD normally trading at 1:20 (5% margin). During its earnings window, the leverage is capped at 1:5 (20% margin). A position that required $1,000 margin at 1:20 will require a $4,000 margin at 1:5 — and if you already held the position, it is recalculated to the higher figure once the report is announced.

Common questions

What if my normal tier is already lower than the cap?

Nothing changes. TRY pairs, for example, are capped at 1:5 no matter what the 1:200 cap on Majors does. The lower number always applies.

Which news events count as “high-impact”?

FNmarkets follows the standard economic calendar — typically top-tier releases like Non-Farm Payrolls, central-bank interest-rate decisions, and inflation (CPI) data. The specific list can change, and FNmarkets can apply higher-margin conditions to any event it judges high-risk.

How long does the news higher-margin window last?

Approximately 15 minutes before a scheduled high-impact release until approximately 5 minutes after it. Timing can shift with the economic calendar and market conditions.

Does the news cap affect my open positions?

No. For general high-impact news (as with the Friday close), the cap applies only to new trades opened during the window and to exposure you add during it. The exception is stock CFDs during earnings, where existing positions are also recalculated.

How are CFD stocks treated during earnings?

Around a company's scheduled earnings (financial report) announcement, FNmarkets caps that stock at 1:5 (20% margin). Two things make earnings different from ordinary news: the window is longer (it can begin up to 7 days before the report), and existing open positions in that stock are also recalculated to the higher margin, not just new trades.

Why was my existing stock position's margin increased?

Because that company announced, or is about to announce, its earnings. During the earnings window, open stock positions are adjusted to the 1:5 earnings margin to cover the gap risk. Once the window ends, margin is recalculated back to normal based on your equity and leverage.

Does ordinary (non-earnings) news affect stocks the same way?

Ordinary high-impact news affects stock CFDs like other instruments — a short window around the release, applied to new trades only. Existing stock positions are recalculated only for earnings announcements, not for general news.

Are cryptocurrencies subject to the caps?

Cryptocurrencies keep their normal tiers through the Friday market close, because they trade over the weekend. However, they are subject to high-impact news conditions and are capped at 1:200 during the news window. FNmarkets can also apply separate higher-margin conditions, restrict trading, or change leverage during periods of exceptional volatility, illiquidity, maintenance, or market disruption.

What happens around public holidays or early market closes?

The higher-margin window can start earlier or run longer than usual when an instrument has shortened trading hours, is closed for a holiday, or has reduced liquidity. Check the trading-hours notices and live Contract Specifications if you're unsure.

Can a higher margin cause an order rejection, margin call, or stop-out?

Yes. Lower leverage increases the margin you need and reduces your free margin, so a new order can be rejected if there isn't enough available. If a margin recalculation brings your account down to the stop-out threshold, positions can be closed automatically under the platform rules. This applies to Friday, news, and stock earnings recalculations alike.

Does higher leverage increase profit on the same position size?

No. Profit and loss for a given position size are driven by market movement and the instrument's value, not by the leverage label. Higher leverage reduces the margin required to control a position and can allow greater exposure, increasing the risk of rapid losses.

Is Unlimited Dynamic Leverage available to every client?

No. It depends on your FNmarkets entity, account type, platform, instrument, and account eligibility, as well as regulatory requirements and risk controls. The published leverage is the maximum available and is not guaranteed for every account or trade.

Can FNmarkets change leverage tiers or higher-margin conditions?

Yes. FNmarkets can update the eligible instruments, volume thresholds, leverage tiers, account eligibility, higher-margin windows, and temporary margin requirements in response to market, liquidity, regulatory, operational, or risk conditions. Always check the latest leverage tables, Contract Specifications, trading-hours notices, and applicable terms before trading.

Summary

Smaller trades carry the lowest margin requirement, which increases in steps as your exposure grows. The system handles that automatically as you trade. On top of the tiers, FNmarkets can temporarily increase the margin you need during three situations: the Friday market close, high-impact news releases, and stock earnings announcements. Friday and news conditions apply to new trades opened in the window; stock earnings conditions can also recalculate positions you already hold. Whatever the situation, MT5's live figure is the one that actually applies.
