What is a Stock CFD?

A Stock CFD is a derivative product that allows you to speculate on the price movement of a share or ETF without owning the underlying asset.


Do I own the shares?

No. Trading a Stock CFD does not provide ownership of the underlying share or ETF.


Do I receive voting rights?

No. Stock CFD holders do not receive voting, shareholder, or subscription rights.


Can I go long and short?

Yes, subject to instrument availability and trading conditions.

  • Long position → benefits from price increase

  • Short position → benefits from price decrease


What happens when a company pays a dividend?

  • If you hold a long position, you will generally receive a dividend-equivalent cash credit

  • If you hold a short position, a dividend-equivalent cash debit will generally apply


Is withholding tax applied to dividends?

Yes.

  • Long positions receive dividends after applicable withholding tax

    • Example: US stocks may have 30% tax deducted

  • Short positions are usually charged the full gross dividend amount


What happens after a stock split?

FNmarkets adjusts your position size and/or price so that the split does not create any artificial profit or loss.


What happens if there is a spin-off or rights issue?

Since CFD traders do not receive actual shares or rights, FNmarkets generally applies a cash adjustment reflecting the value of the event.


What happens if a company is acquired or delisted?

FNmarkets may adjust or close your position based on:

  • Transaction terms

  • Last available market price

  • Another reasonable reference price


Can corporate actions affect open positions?

Yes. Corporate actions may result in:

  • Cash credits or debits

  • Changes in position size or price

  • Trading restrictions or suspension

  • Closure of the CFD


Are commissions applicable?

No. Stock CFDs on FNmarkets are commission-free, as costs are included in the spread.


Are overnight charges applicable?

Yes. Stock CFDs may be subject to overnight financing charges, depending on the instrument’s trading conditions.


What is the leverage for Stock CFDs?

Leverage is available up to 1:20
